Breaking the Stigma of the Nursing Home and Assisted Living

Have you ever heard your loved one tell you, “You’re not going to put me in a home”? It’s the age-old stigma that conjures up the image of a cold, institutional environment where seniors are warehoused and neglected. This is an outdated perception for nursing homes, but even more so, further from the truth for Assisted Living Communities.

Challenging Negative Stereotypes

Modern Assisted Livings prioritize person-centered care, comfort, and community. Breaking through the stereotype of a nursing home, they shift the focus from mere care to a vibrant community experience and redefine what it means to live life to the fullest in one’s later years.

Assisted Living Communities offer a home-like environment than a clinical one. They are ideal for those seeking comfort, community, and what is often times hard to believe: independence. Nursing homes prioritize medical care and treatment such as physical and occupational therapy. Both options are equally needed and important. The choice depends on your loved one’s needs and preferences.

The Chosen Difference

Planning ahead is what can make all the difference when it comes to senior living options. Choosing an Assisted Living community allows an individual to maintain their autonomy by controlling their future, selecting a community that is supportive of not only their needs but their likes and dislikes. Whether it be activities or amenities, an Assisted Living consideration will allow an individual to cater their future on their lifestyle that suits them best, rather than leaving it up to chance. Early intervention creates muscle memory that avoids emergencies. Wouldn’t you want to choose where you live? Be a part of the process of choosing a community, the apartment, and decorating.

The Benefits of Community Living

  • Maintenance-free living: No more household chores. No more yard work. No more home maintenance!
  • Access to healthcare services: Communities offer on-site healthcare services such as 24/7 care staff, RN or LPN’s on staff and partnerships with healthcare providers. Some communities even assist with scheduling and transportation to appointments.
  • Socialization and a sense of community: Opportunities to connect with others, build relationships, and participate in activities such as large events, senior balls, and outings.
  • Safety and security: Assisted Living communities offer 24/7 staff, emergency response systems, and secure environments.
  • Peace of Mind/Promotion of independence: Maintain independence in activities of daily living and receiving help only where and when it’s needed.
  • Respite for family caregivers: Relief for family members who may be caring for loved ones. Be family again.
  • Apartment Style Living: Individual apartments that can be personalized and decorated to individuals’ tastes.

The Benefits of a Nursing Home

  • Skilled Nursing: Receive specialized care from licensed nurses and therapists
  • Rehabilitation Services: Receive physical, occupational, and speech therapy to aid recovery.
  • 24/7 Medical Care & Monitoring: Continuous medical attention and monitoring around-the-clock.
  • Complex Medical Attention: Wound care, IV Therapy, and post-surgical care.
  • Nutritional Support: Diets tailored to specific medical conditions, such as swallowing disorders.

Personalized Care and Support

Nursing homes and Assisted Living Communities can both provide 24/7 medical care. However, Nursing Homes can provide skilled nursing and rehabilitation services for those that require a higher level of care whereas Assisted Living Communities offer supportive services such as home care, adult day care for individuals who need assistance with daily activities. Think of intensive medical care versus supporting daily living activities such as bathing, grooming, and dressing. The best way to determine what level of care is appropriate is a nurse assessment for an individualized care plan.

Cost and Funding Differences

The cost of Assisted Living is going to vary depending on location, services, apartment, and level of care. In Kitsap County, the average costs will range from $4,500 to $7,000 per month. The costs are typically paid for out-of-pocket. Some communities offer Medicaid contract programs and private pay spenddowns, or other forms of financial assistance. Services in Assisted Living typically include rent, meals, housekeeping, transportation, and assistance with daily activities.

On the other hand, the cost of a Nursing Home is generally more expensive than Assisted Living; ranging from $7,500 to $10,000 per month or more. However, it can be funded through a range of financial options including:

  • Medicare/Medicaid
  • Private Insurance
  • Out-of-Pocket

Services in a Nursing Home include 24/7 nursing care, meals, housekeeping, and assistance with daily activities, as well as medical services and rehabilitation therapies such as physical and occupational. A big reason for the increase of cost of a Nursing Home is due to them providing more intensive medical care than an Assisted Living. Understanding these differences between the two will help individuals and families make informed decisions about care options.

By exploring these questions, individuals and families can gain a more comprehensive understanding of care options and make those big decisions that prioritize quality of life, care, and support whether it be a Nursing Home or an Assisted Living.
